Naval Special Warfare (NSW)

Naval Special Warfare (NSW) is the United States Navy component responsible for SEAL teams and Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen (SWCC). NSW publishes the official Preparatory Training Guide that forms the basis of BUD/S preparation programs, establishing the standards and training methodologies candidates should follow before entering the selection pipeline.

NSW and the Training Guide

The Naval Special Warfare Preparatory Training Guide is the official resource for BUD/S candidates. It outlines a 26-week training plan covering cardio, calisthenics, and strength training, along with PST standards and training methodologies. The guide represents the institutional knowledge of what physical preparation a candidate needs to maximize their chance of completing BUD/S.

The Selection Pipeline

NSW's selection process begins well before BUD/S. Candidates must first pass the PST with competitive scores, then enter a preparatory phase at Naval Special Warfare Preparatory School (NSW Prep) before advancing to BUD/S itself. The 26-week preparation program is designed to be completed before a candidate enters any stage of the official pipeline, ensuring they arrive at a baseline level of fitness.

Training Philosophy

NSW's training philosophy emphasizes methodical progression over raw intensity. The preparatory guide doesn't prescribe maximum-effort workouts every day — instead, it cycles through training modalities (LSD, CHI, intervals) and adjusts intensity based on measured performance. This approach reflects the operational reality that SEALs need sustainable fitness, not one-day peak performance.
